INTRODUCTION

Welcome to my e-portfolio. I will graduate in May 2004 from the University of Georgia with a degree in Social Science Education. I am excited to embark on my teaching career. My portfolio was designed to outline my goals and desires as a social studies teacher.

The primary purpose of social studies is to “ help young people develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a culturally diverse, democratic society in the independent world (National Council for the Social Studies).” As a social studies teacher I have the responsibility to teach these values and concepts to my students. I believe students can learn at their highest potential in a student focused and centered environment. The most important goal in Social Studies is to promote learning. More specific goals that need to be taught in social studies are critical thinking, democratic beliefs, diversity, and content. Teaching students to be effective thinkers in a democratic society is an immediate goal of education.

My rational will outline my goals and beliefs for teaching social studies more in depth. The beliefs of my rationale are also seen through the six professional standards listed on my portfolio.
